Volume 13

To all of our CSA Members,

We hope that our appeal does not offend anyone.  We do not wish for a “hand-out” only help if you are willing and confident that we will use your investment wisely and for the purpose we describe.

It is with a humble heart that we ask you to help us.  Two weeks ago our New (1994 UD) refrigerated truck blew the engine as well as fried the entire brake system on all 4 wheels.  What was an $11,000.00 truck will end up costing us over $20,000.00 by the time we replace the engine (a diesel with 82,000 miles on it sent from Bath, Maine) as well as all the associated costs.  It will cost us over $10,000.00 and as it stands now we will be seriously extended due in part to the unexpected expenditure on a truck that we were led to believe was sound (there is no lemon-law for commercial vehicles in CT) and the extremely wet weather which played havoc with our crops and those of many of our sister farms.

As a result of these circumstances, we wish to appeal to you, our members, for help.  If you can afford any amount to help us pay for our unexpected and potentially business-crushing repairs, we would gratefully receive your expression of kindness.

We do believe that God will provide, as we have done our best to make good out of a significantly trying year.  Our continuing bright spot revolves around the positive responses to the 2008 CSA season from our members.  Your encouragement as well as your aptly worded constructive criticism has enabled us to become ever better at what we do for you.  For those members of multiple year membership, the contrast over the past 3 years is even more pronounced.  Our packaging will become more stream-lined as we move on to a more ergonomically designed and functional work facility for next year.  We were able to put a metal roof over our entire work area this year.  We will put on the website pictures of all the “new” stuff that has happened here at Heavens Harvest Farm.

In the past week, several people have inquired about membership because of your spreading the word.  Here are three things that you can do to guarantee the continued ability of Heavens Harvest Farm to flourish for you and many others.

1.      Spread the word!!! Ask us for flyers or cards that tell the CSA story regarding Heavens Harvest Farm.

2.       If you live in a community outside of your drop-off location, consider becoming a site coordinator for the 2009 season.   Call the farm for details.  508.867.9577. If you have a friend, family member or business associate who may be interested in becoming a local site coordinator, have them call us as well.

3.      Consider helping us to defray the cost of the large truck repairs by donating any amount to Heavens Harvest Farm.  We are considering becoming a not-for-profit entity to further our desire to help as many people as possible.

This week finds a bounty of wonderful produce for you! May God richly bless each and every one of you!
