Week 3

Greetings to all Heavens Harvest Farm CSA Members!!!

The planting, caring for, picking, packing and providing is going well. Weather is wonderfully cooperative and we are grateful for the sun and the rain.

We still have 2 meat shares available for anyone who is interested. Please call the farm asap.

Summer veggies are coming soon! Within the next several weeks we will have tomatoes, peppers etc.  Look for blueberries for all soon!

If you have any suggestions about new and or different veggies to grow for late summer or fall please let us know and we will investigate.

Have a great week!

-Ashley & Ethel

Full shares are receiving Shelling Peas this week.  Please remember to shell before eating! They are delicious raw in salads or lightly steamed.

Single shares are receiving edible podded peas…enjoy the whole pod and inner peas.

Some of you may have received or will be receiving Hakurei Turnips!!!

This white "salad turnip" sets the standard for flavor.

The flat-round, smooth white roots mature early, just after radishes. The flavor is great raw (but cooking enhances their natural sweetness) - sweet and fruity - and the texture is crisp and tender. The dark green hairless tops are useful raw or lightly cooked with the roots.

Braised Hakurei Turnips
6 Hakurei turnips, tops removed
2 cups cold water
3/4 cup mirin
1/4 cup white soy sauce

Trim turnips and peel with a vegetable peeler. (1) Cut the turnips into sixths and (2) place them in a saucepan with the remaining ingredients. (3) Cover and bring to a simmer over medium-low heat; cook very slowly for about 15 minutes, or until just tender. Let cool to room temperature in the braising liquid, then drain and serve with steamed or roasted fish

Curried Hakurei Turnips

One chopped onion
2 tablespoons oil
5 or 6 harkurei, peeled and sliced thin (all the recipes said to peel them but it seemed sort of pointless, since they were so tender throughout)
2 teaspoons curry powder
1 teaspoon salt
one lemon, cut into wedges

Sauté the onion in the oil for a few minutes until translucent. Add the turnips, the curry powder and salt and cook until everything is tender. Squeeze some lemon juice over the dish before serving and serve with extra lemon wedges.
